Your three main ‘representational systems’ are visual, auditory and kinesthetic. You can think of these three systems as the language of your mind. You use these systems to create a mental ‘map’ of your world, which helps you to understand everything and live your life effectively.
An important thing to note here is that, the term ‘visualization’ refers to a lot more than just creating mental images and pictures. Visualization is a full-sensory experience. It actually involves creating detailed mental images with sounds and feelings included (and sometimes if appropriate, it also includes smells and tastes).
It is also important to note that there are two main perspectives that you can take while visualizing that will significantly impact your experience and the effects of the visualization. These two perspectives are known as, associated and disassociated. When you are visualizing an experience from an associated perspective, you imagine or remember the experience as if you are living it, looking out through your own eyes, hearing with your ears and feeling with your body.
When you are visualizing an experience from a disassociated perspective, your perspective is that of watching yourself in the experience, from a third person’s point of view.
Throughout the book, where applicable, you will be instructed as to which perspective to use to get the maximum efficacy out of each particular technique or strategy. You may be wondering how all this relates to losing weight and changing habits, here’s how. You already learned about how you create habits or unconscious ‘programs’ by physically performing a particular behavior over and over again out in the real world.
