The key learning here is that you’re doing affirmations to get yourself to start thinking and acting in NEW and DIFFERENT ways which will help you to attain your goal. The only way that you can do something new or different is to step outside of your ‘comfort zone.’
Anything outside of your comfort zone is the unknown and sometimes, that can be a little uncomfortable. But this is the place you want to be right now because if you keep doing the same thing, you’ll keep getting the same results you’ve been getting. You must do something different if you want different results.
Negation Will ‘Not’ Get You What You Want
Negation is probably one of the most commonly used and detrimental ‘language patterns,’ in relation to achieving goals. Negation is, taking a positive statement and stating it in the negative. For example:
• Positive statement: “Read the next sentence.”
• Negation of the positive statement: “Don’t read the next sentence.”
Negation is not a useful form of language to use when programming yourself to achieve a goal. This is because negation exists only in language, not in experience. It is impossible for your mind to represent the negative of an experience. For example, “Don’t think of a pink elephant.”
It’s impossible for you to have read that last sentence without thinking of a pink elephant. In order for you to have understood what you just read, you had to first think about a pink elephant. That involved creating a mental image of exactly the thing that you were trying not to think about.
Another more related example would be, “I’m not going to eat junk food today.” By making a statement such as this in an attempt to motivate yourself to lose.
